Saks, Inc. (originally Proffitt's, Inc.) was an American holding company founded in 1919. Before acquisition by the Canadian-founded Hudson's Bay Company in 2013, it held ownership of department store chains including New York City -based Saks Fifth Avenue (1998–2013) and Tennessee -based Proffitt's (1919–2005).
The mall's original anchors were Miller & Rhoads (sold to Hecht's in 1990), Sears, and Leggett, a division of Belk. Hess's was added in 1987. Proffitt's, which acquired the former Hess's in 1993, was sold to Dillard's in 1996. The Leggett store briefly operated as Belk before it was traded to Dillard's in 1998 as part of a mutual exchange.
Belk is an unincorporated community in DeKalb County, in the U.S. state of Tennessee. History. A post office was established at Belk in 1893, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. The name Belk was the maiden name of the first postmaster's wife. References
History. More than ten years of research and planning took place before Bel Air Mall finally came to fruition in August 1967. Designed by the architecture firm of Herbert H. Johnson Associates of Washington, DC, the enclosed mall was developed by WKRG-TV founder Kenneth R. Giddens, William Lyon and Jay Altmayer as the centerpiece of an automobile-centric edge city known as Bel Air.
